Filming in the Cotswolds
What do Harry Potter, James Bond and Bridget Jones have in common? All three have been filmed in Gloucestershire – the Hogwarts scenes in the first two Harry Potter films at Gloucester Cathedral, the car race on the snow in “Tomorrow Never Dies” in the Cotswolds, and the scenes when Bridget visits her parents at Snowshill village.
In addition there have been numerous other productions that have made the most of the abundant variety of locations to be found here. Gloucester Docks has been used for productions of Dickens and for sea stories, and gorgeous Stanway House has been used many times for classic period dress productions. Many overseas TV companies have filmed travel, gardening and special interest shows here.
Gloucestershire – the Cotswold County - has a wide variety of architectural features and landscapes of use for film locations. It’s a big county that ranges from black and white timber-framed houses in Tewkesbury, ancient woodland in the Forest of Dean, industrial mills near Stroud, Regency villas in Cheltenham, Victorian warehouses in Gloucester. There is a racetrack, two steam railways, market squares and rows of unspoiled Cotswold stone houses. With such a variety of locations, plus film studios at Cheltenham and diverse other resources like “Snow Business” (who create the snow for many major productions), and easily accessible from London and several international airports, Gloucestershire is wonderfully well placed to host film productions.
