Be Sustainable

Sustainability for Cotswold businesses

The Cotswolds area has been a tourist destination for as long as we can remember, with visitors coming for the beautiful rural setting, high quality accommodation and wide range of events. To keep the Cotswolds this way, we need to conserve and enhance the area by making tourism sustainable.

Getting started

Running your business in a sustainable way has many benefits, such as saving costs on utility bills, reduced waste (and therefore disposal), offering added value to your customers, and supporting the local economy by using their produce. Implementing a sustainability policy will make your business better prepared for future legislation and impacts of the changing climate.

The Green Tourism Business Scheme can evaluate and award your green credentials to help you prove to potential customers that you are a making a minimum impact on the environment. They also offer advice and support.

See below to download South West Tourism's 'Preparing for Climate Change' leaflet.

Sustainable Tourism for Dummies

A free new resource to encourage the tourism industry to 'go greener' is now available with the publication of the first ever 'Guide to Sustainable Tourism for Dummies'®

This handy guide is designed to help tourism businesses of all sizes become more sustainable - saving money, attracting more 'green conscious' customers and reducing their impact on the environment.

Saving energy & water

The South West has some the highest prices for water in the country, and hot water adds to your energy bill too. Click here to access the fact sheets, towel agreement cards, case studies, discounts and training resources from South West Tourism to identify and address the key issues. Energy bills make up around 40% of the average business' day to day running costs. Click here for a range of resources - fact sheets, case studies, room cards, training resources, discounts - to help you save energy.

Adapting to climate change

This film from South West Tourism highlights some of the key problems presented by our changing climate and showcases how businesses are taking measures to adapt. Including top tips on how to identify the potential risks to your business, this DVD acts as a useful guide to help plan and adapt for the changes ahead.

Communicating your credentials

Effective communications help increase your appeal to customers, and the chances of them (and any staff you have) joining in with your efforts. Click here for presentations & resources from South West Tourism. Read about the Green Tourism Business Scheme here.

Encouraging your customers to be sustainable

Encourage your visitors to think about sustainable tourism and motivate them to make a difference. Make it easy for them to see that you have taken action and help them out by gathering information for them on:

  • Sustainable transport to get to the Cotswolds - including how to get to you
  • Local transport in the Cotswolds
  • Walking, cycling and picnics in and around the area in which they are staying
  • Locally produced food & drink
  • Your green credentials - do you have a GTBS award, source your produce locally, have a really effective recycling policy or use a green energy supplier? Make sure everyone knows about it!

More information for visitors can be found on our Be Green in the Cotswolds page.

South West Tourism's website offers advice and support on sustainability in tourism, including inspiring examples and a guide to running greener events.
