Sara Chardin unearth’s some of the finest delis in the Cotswolds.

It’s not only the quality of the restaurants and cafés in the Cotswolds that has earned us a well-deserved reputation with foodies, but also the mouth-watering array of local produce. Make time to browse in one of the many top-notch delis and food emporiums, to seek out the best seasonal, local produce.

Delis in the south Cotswolds

Cirencester

The Organic Farmshop at Abbey Home Farm, just outside Cirencester, sells eggs, meat, yoghurt and vegetables – all produced on the farm. This farm shop also has a café and offers cookery courses. At award-winning Jesse Smith’s, on the outskirts of Cirencester, the deli offers a coffee house, as well as a tantalising selection of goodies including traditional home-made pies, cured meats and cheeses. The buzzy Made by Bob in the heart of Cirencester is a restaurant and deli (opening again in 2017 after a period of refurbishment).

The M5 and Wotton-under-Edge

Gloucester Services (between junctions 11a and 12 on the M5) has become a destination in its own right, showcasing local produce. You’ll find a range of fresh meats, cheeses and patisserie alongside store cupboard treats. It’s the only service station to be added to the Good Food Guide.

Cicada Deli serves Wotton-under-Edge and the surrounding villages with good quality local and artisan foods, ciders, fine wines and gifts.

Nailsworth and Tetbury

William’s Fishmarket & Foodhall is a multi award-winning delicatessen and restaurant in Nailsworth. It offers a fabulous range of fresh fish and seafood, as well as charcuterie, cheese and locally grown fruit and veg. Also renowned locally, Hobbs House Bakery is owned by television’s ‘the Fabulous Baker Brothers.’ For a deli with a twist, Nailsworth’s Asparagasm Deli and Diner offers raw cakes, unique vegan cheese and vegan beer.

The House of Cheese in Tetbury specialises in many varieties of cheese. They can create selection packs and also make cheese wedding cakes. Quayles sells smoked fish, charcuterie and cheese, as well as artisan breads made by Bertinet Bakery in Bath. Their café/bistro opens daily.

Painswick and Stroud

The owners of Olivas deli, in the heart of pretty Painswick, have brought a taste of their native Colombia to this tiny, hidden gem of a café and deli, by way of the excellent coffee. A perfect place to refuel while walking the Cotswold Way.

At Kendrick Street Deli in the centre of Stroud, you’ll find a selection of cheeses, meats and home-made quiches. It opens as a café for coffee and lunch.

Delis in the east Cotswolds

Burford

Mrs Bumbles, in Burford, is a great all round deli and food shop. It is stuffed to the brim with all sorts of goodies and is full of character and charm. A mile from Burford, Upton Smokery sells its own traditionally smoked meat, game and fish, as well as other local favourites such as Tewkesbury Mustard, Bibury trout and Stinking Bishop cheese.

The Cotswold Cheese Company has branches in Burford, Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on- the-Wold. The stores stock more than 80 different artisan and farmhouse cheeses, with a real focus on local quality producers, as well as those from further afield.

Chipping Norton and Kingham

Delicacy in Chippping Norton is a well-established deli, stocking over a 1000 products. It now has a welcoming café serving lunch, cakes and snacks.

Renowned Daylesford Organic, near the pretty village of Kingham, has grown out of an organic farm into a shop, café and cookery school. It sells a whole range of treats and luxury goods and has its own dedicated cheese room.

Witney and Woodstock

A new addition to the town of Witney, Wates & Co offers a range of high quality Cotswold products including chutneys, cheeses, paté and hand-made scotch eggs.

Hampers Food and Wine in Woodstock is a deli, café and gift hamper business filled with a diverse range of top quality food and wine. It features over 40 cheeses, charcuterie meats, savoury tarts, posh pork pies and patés.

Delis in the north Cotswolds

Chipping Campden and Longborough

Toke’s in Chipping Campden sells the highest quality cheese and wine and other fine food ingredients at sensible prices. They stock fresh produce, local pre-cooked meals, deli, wine and cheese galore.

Longborough’s The Cotswold Foodstore champions local food and friendly service. This extensive deli features a wide selection of cheeses chosen by their in-house connoisseur. As well as local pies, scotch eggs, antipasti and a tempting selection of olives.

Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold

The Greek Deli and Café, in the heart of Moreton-in-Marsh, offers delicious Greek food and authentic dishes, sourced from Greek and local suppliers. The Cotswold Cheese Company has a branch here, as well as in Burford and Stow-on-the-Wold.

Hamptons Deli, located next to the ancient market square in Stow, is famous locally for its fine-quality foods. It stocks around 100 different cheeses, a bewildering choice of preserved goods, locally raised pies and smoked meats and fish.

Tewkesbury and Winchcombe

The 1471 Deli, in the heart of Tewkesbury, is named after the date of the Battle of Tewkesbury. It’s best known for its meats and cheeses. It also stocks Tewkesbury Mustard, once known as the best mustard in England, it came in the form of balls – still produced today.

Located in the heart of pretty Winchcombe, Food Fanatics is an award-winning delicatessen and coffee shop providing high quality food and drink. An extensive range of cheeses and other delicatessen fare includes pies, olives, pates and fresh pasta.
