An idyllic ivy-clad bolthole in the heart of the beautiful sleepy Cotswold village of Northleach, The Wheatsheaf is a traditional Cotswold inn with 14 bespoke bedrooms. With an appreciation of history, heritage and tradition in character with old-school qualities, this was The Lucky Onion’s first property. Hunting, shooting, fishing is the vibe here with a distinctive Cotswold atmosphere where you simply feel like a local. The racing community are also regulars with some of the best racing spots in the country a stone’s throw away.
Buzzing with locals, the flagstone-lined pub has a country feel with dogs curled up in front of the roaring fire. Spot a local farmer enjoying a pint of local ale or watch a family of tourists taking in the beauty of the Cotswolds. The food flaunts the wealth of local, seasonal produce available in the area with the tastiest local game shot by friends. Head Chef Pete McAllister’s food philosophy is about cooking simply and serving in a way that allows the food to speak for itself. The result is a daily-changing menu delivering rustic classics and comfort food, with a few modern touches to boot. There’s a top-notch wine list and great beer, too. The dining room, lined with animal skulls, is perfect for shooting parties with a gun cabinet (complete with a shoot butler).
Down higgledy-piggledy corridors, the 14 individually designed bedrooms go that little bit further. Classic but industrial in dusty colours and decorated with old photographs, each room is super cosy with exposed walls and cosy vaulted-ceilings. An enormous emperor size bed, deep freestanding bathtub and beautiful period bathroom make it the ideal escape from the daily grind. We love to welcome dogs too.
