Protect the Cotswolds

Destinations and travellers across the world are becoming increasingly aware of the negative impact that travel can have on our planet and are seeking ways to minimise their footprint whilst still enjoying new adventures.

Here in the Cotswolds, we want to continue to offer a warm welcome to visitors, but it is essential that we do so in a sustainable, conscious way that protects the Cotswolds for future generations. We’re doing lots of work ‘behind the scenes’ with businesses and other organisations to reduce the negative impacts tourism has on the area, but we need your help too!

How to be an eco-friendly visitor to the Cotswolds

Stay for longer - there's no rush!

If you’re thinking of coming to the Cotswolds for a day trip or just a night or two, this is your perfect excuse to stay for longer! Your carbon footprint for travelling to and from the Cotswolds will remain the same no matter how long you stay for, so extend your stay, slow down and really experience the Cotswolds.

Make your journey part of your holiday

The Cotswolds is well-connected by trains and buses making it easy to visit the region sustainably. Not only will travelling by public transport reduce your carbon footprint, but it allows you to relax and take in the stunning scenery from the very start of your visit.

If you do travel by car, you can reduce your impact by planning a few car-free days whilst you’re in the Cotswolds. Explore the area near where you’re staying by walking and cycling, it’s a great way to see the countryside, towns & villages at a leisurely pace, and there’s plenty of lovely pubs and cafes to stop at along the way. If you prefer, why not take a guided tour – there’s walking, cycling and small group tours – all of which can add to your guilt-free holiday.

Only leave footprints behind

As a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we want to keep the Cotswolds that way. The Cotswolds is home to diverse wildlife and delicate ecosystems that need to be protected. When walking or cycling always stick to marked trails, avoid disturbing any ruins or historic sites and always take any waste or litter with you. Remember to take away nothing but memories and leave only footprints behind!

Make a conscious choice

From accommodation to attractions, experience providers to retailers and restaurants to pubs; across the Cotswolds there are businesses putting sustainability at the heart of what they do. During your visit to the Cotswolds make a conscious choice to support our businesses who are prioritising the planet.

Respect the locals

When visiting the Cotswolds, please be considerate of the local people who live here. Always leave gates and property as you find them, and avoid blocking gateways or driveways when parking, as these are essential for residents and farmers. Remember that the quaint cottages and houses in the beautiful Cotswold towns and villages are people’s homes and their privacy should be respected. But most importantly, a friendly "hello" to passersby is always welcomed with a smile and will make you feel more like a local too.

Show you care

Help us continue looking after the Cotswolds by donating to the Caring for the Cotswolds scheme. The Cotswolds is under greater pressure than ever before and by making a donation, however small, you will be making a contribution to ensure vital habitats and species are conserved, our heritage is protected, and residents and visitors alike can enjoy this fantastic landscape for generations to come.
