'The Friendly Line in the Cotswolds' offers a unique opportunity to sample train travel from 50 years ago hauled by steam, diesel or diesel railcar. Your 29 mile round trip from Broadway to Cheltenham Racecourse has glorious views westwards of the Vale of Evesham, the Malverns and Wales, and eastwards the Cotswolds.
Covid-19 update: The railway is now open again. At Broadway, Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse stations the Public will not have access to the platforms. This will help maintain social distancing. All journeys will start and and finish at Toddington and only passengers with tickets for the train will be allowed on to the platform. Advance bookings essential as most trains are already fully booked.
The GWSR is a volunteer run steam and diesel heritage railway in the English Cotswolds. Since 1981, the volunteers have restored over 15 miles of line, together with platforms, buildings, steam and diesel locomotives and rolling stock. In addition to a scheduled service, the GWSR hosts a number of galas, enthusiasts’ events and events for all the family throughout the year, including our popular Santa Specials and Fish and Chips specials.
We operate between Cheltenham Racecourse and Broadway (stations at Cheltenham Racecourse, Gotherington, Winchcombe, Hayles Abbey Halt and Toddington), with steam hauled trains on most operating days. Open on selected midweek days during April to October, details on the website or from any of the stations.
Free car parks at Toddington, Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse. Winchcombe has a 1950s themed cafe, Discovery Coach and Model Railway Coach. At Toddington a children's play area, small signal box, museums and cafe. Rover tickets give you unlimited travel all day.
