Found in the picturesque Cotswold village of Whatcote, The Royal Oak is a recently refurbished traditional pub.
Built in 1168, The Royal Oak has a rich history. It was an ale house for workers building churches in the area and has been a pub for more than 800 years. The dining room, which seats 40, serves a menu that focuses sharply on seasonal British Wild Food.
The Royal Oak makes use of their close relationships with local farms, producers and gamekeepers of the region, bringing the ethos of local and seasonal dining to a new level. Dishes such as pig's head and black pudding lasagna with cider reduction and hazelnut, fallow buck, salt baked turnip, buttered chard, smoked potato and wild horseradish and preserved pear, hogweed and cobnut bits and bobs are indicative of this pedigree.
The bar is the essence of The Royal Oak and things haven’t changed a great deal since Oliver Cromwell was a regular. Local cask ales are available on tap, and the team carefully source British beer and lager from local companies like Deya, Clouded Minds, Purity and many more. Richard has brought a small slice of their seasonal menu over to the bar offering a selection of small snacks and plates such as rabbit scotched quail egg, and pickled pheasants eggs, pigeon biltong for relaxed dining in the bar and garden.
