Churchill & Sarsden Heritage Centre

Housed in the remains of the old medieval church, the Heritage Centre is in a stunning setting overlooking the site of the ‘lost’ village of Churchill, destroyed by fire in 1684.

The building may be only 15' by 30' but its ancient walls contain state of the art technology, with touch screens telling the remarkable stories of two eminent sons of the village, Warren Hastings, first Governor-General of India (1732-1818) and geologist William Smith (1769-1839), as well as the part played in the community by the village squire, James Langston (1796-1863).

Every year there is a special exhibition on a relevant local topic – please see the website (www.churchillheritage.org.uk) for details. There is also a wealth of archive material available for local and family historians - including census records, parish registers, photographs and maps.

The Churchill and Sarsden Heritage Centre is 3 miles from Chipping Norton and 6 miles from Stow-on-the-Wold. There is limited wheelchair access. School and other visits are very welcome during the week.
